Why Kids Should Learn How to Code?

Increases critical thinking and problem-solving skills. 

For many developers like myself, part of the appeal of coding is the challenge and reward of seeing my code come to life after debugging. Coding, debugging and remixing your own and other people’s code is fundamentally problem-solving activities. This will help kids to go back and think about what just happened and quickly solve the problem. Kids will learn to break big problems down into smaller manageable peace and also to use already gained knowledge on their own little projects.

Future Job Ready

With the knowledge of programming, anyone can become superheroes, with this skill their opportunities will increase which can open pathways in, medical, science, engineering, defence, space and more. In the next 25 years, 71% of all new jobs will be required to have some STEM knowledge and 15% of the jobs in the future will be all automated, this includes such things as drivers, train/bus drivers, and other factory jobs. Learning to code will increase your child’s odds of securing a lucrative STEM career, especially in a world where computing jobs are growing at over twice the national average.

Turning Ideas To Action

Once kids have the foundations of how to code, this then gives them the platform to start building whatever they desire. A famous example is Bill Gates who learned how to code when he was in eighth grade. His first program was in BASIC and was a computer representation of Game Tic Tac Toe. At the age of 15, he and Paul Allen made $20,000 with a computer program called Traf-O-Data which measured traffic flow in Seattle area.

Another example is Linus Torvalds the creator of the Linux operating system and Git starting to learn to code when he was in primary school just by doing simple stuff. When he started Linux he called it a “Hobby”, now the Linux operating system is a widely known within the IT community, it also powers 446 of the world’s top 500 supercomputers.

Programming Is Awesome And Fun.

With programming kids can make and produce many fascinating applications, they may build games, apps, websites, chat bots and much more. Children can tap into their creativity and produce things that us adults wouldn’t have imagined.

For many, part of the appeal of coding is the challenge and reward of seeing their code come to life after a good debugging session. Don’t be fooled, however–with the right instruction, getting started with programming can be easy and fun.

Programming is the language of the digital age.

When was I was growing up I wasn’t introduced to my first phone until I was in year 11, nowadays children are growing up differently than the previous generations. We are surrounded by Smartphones, Laptops, Tablets, Youtube, Netflix, and Facebook which are embedded in their daily lives. Even the toys are digital including Legos, LeapFrogs, Spheros and whiteboards. With this we need to understand the importance of the logic behind them, understanding the mechanics and code helps them understand the world.

Space Suits Gets An Upgrade

Future space travelers on the CST-100 Starliner will be wearing the new “Boeing Blue” space suit which is developed by Boeing. The new suit has some amazing new features that didn’t have in the old white and orange space suits you usually find at NASA. Unlike traditional spacesuits, this one has many zippers to make it comfortable to move and sit down in the suit.

The spacesuits will now be 40 percent light the previous suits thanks to its innovative layers which also will keep the traveler/astronaut cool. The gloves on the suit are touch screen friendly which will help whilst in the capsule with tablets, touchscreen panels and if need be a selfie in mid-flight. The future of space travel suit will only get better from here.

App Helping The Blind

A mobile application built by Marita Cheng is helping the blind explore and experience the world differently. The app uses computer vision & neutral networks on your phone to identify objects and colours by using the phone’s camera. According to Airpoly by using neural networks directly on the device, the app will not require an internet connection, it will also be ten times faster than cloud solutions for image recognition. Currently, there are 285 million visually impaired people in the world and in the next 5 years, two-thirds of them will become smartphone users.

A New Hope For Clean Energy

A new report published by Bloomberg New Energy Finance are giving hope to the new age in solar energy, although solar energy in some countries with dominant fossil fuels, coal and gas are still expensive reports indicate that by now and 2040 the cost of solar will reduce and thus becoming cheaper than the rest. Solar energy is however now half the price of coal and gas, it also is cheaper than the other renewables such as the wind and hydro energy. New solar projects are now costing less to build than wind projects in many countries. In 2017 you should see more projects in solar energy also more efficient solar panels.

For any website to run and work, it will require HTML which stands for Hypertext Markup Language and CSS which Cascade Style Sheets. Both are fairly easy to learn but if you want to have a functional website CSS makes everything look pretty. Ruby is a high-level programming language and a popular general purpose language. Currently in high demand in the marketplace, as it has more commonly used with Ruby on Rails framework to develop web applications. Concise and readable, it is easy to pick up but also plenty powerful. Companies like Twitter, Soundcloud, Goodreads and Kickstarter got their products off the ground with Ruby.

If you want to a career change the best place to start learning to program is Udacity, if you want to just up skill yourself the second best place is Udemy.  Udacity is slightly pricey which won’t work for some people with a tight budget or some students. Plus side is the courses are supported by big tech companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Google. On Udemy you can choose various courses not just, programming, equally good as you can up skill yourself in other areas.

Startup Community’s Corporate Responsibility

Ginormous corporate entities scramble to close deals at the end of the last financial year FY 15. Order value and order gross margin are two words that are embedded in every sentence through any conversation across board rooms and conference halls. Many of these corporations are advocates for digital transformation and agile methodologies. The last month of the financial year in these big corporations is when one can see inefficiencies running rampantly across business units. Yes they are present horizontally across verticals.

Start ups are born agile. They are thoroughly an outcome driven engine that is ruthless at breaking barriers. An engine that is driven purely by passion and fuelled by dreams of collective individuals wanting to making their mark on this world. The power that is presented by this collection of motivated individuals has disrupted traditional business models beyond recognition.

Companies and economies are driven by GDP ( gross domestic product ), the last metric I would use to measure mankind’s growth and this as we are squandering away the last drop of water , cutting down the last tree and consuming the last of our breathable air to keep shareholders happy and stock markets afloat. Man knows his problem but likes to settle for less and selfishly take away what rightfully belongs to his children.

As an entrepreneur , founder it is our responsibility to bring the startup mentality to corporations to innovatively resolve some of mankind’s oldest problems – growing sustainably. Political and economic short sightedness prominently displayed by companies are no barrier too big for us entrepreneurs to take down. Next time you deal with a corporate giant,  invite and show them how business is done. Deal with responsible corporations. Take them on your journey , some of the best minds in the business are often open to change. You shouldn’t have to care about their fate , but wait you might want to about the fate of the future generations.
